Robert Bamford and Lionel Martin started a motor engineering business in Fulham in January 1913. Their goal was to manufacture an English sports car to rival the quality of the French Bugatti.

The name Aston Martin actually came about from Lionel Martin's wife, Kate. She had the bright idea that if the name for the new car started with an 'A', it would feature at the top of the list of runners in the programme at competitions, and it was hoped that this would assist with promoting the new car. So, the name Aston Martin was decided, being partly derived from Aston Hill, a hillclimb venue close to Aston Clinton in Buckinghamshire.

In 1926 Bamford & Martin were taken over by Renwick & Bertelli and the new company of Aston Martin Motors Ltd was formed. Starting with a completely clean drawing board and plenty of his own ideas Augustus Cesare Bertelli, with his coachbuilder brother Harry and Claude Hill, and with the backing of Lord Charnwood, set about re-inventing 'Aston Martin'.

During its near 100 year history Aston Martin has produced more than 22,000 cars and some 75 per cent are still in existence. This is testament to the fact that both the company and individual owners place an exceptional onus upon the ‘Car for Life’ philosophy that is at the heart of Aston Martin ownership.
