On 14 November 1899, August Horch established the company A. Horch & Cie. in Cologne. Here he developed his first car, which was completed at the beginning of 1901.
In 1909 Horch withdrew from the company he had founded and set up a new enterprise. The new company established on July 16, 1909 could not again take its founder's name for reasons of fair trade and he therefore took the the latin translation of "horch" is ... "AUDI" (in English: Listen!) and commenced operations under the name Audi Automobilwerke GmbH, Zwickau, on April 25, 1910.
The Audi badge – the 'Four Rings' – is the emblem of one of the oldest car manufacturers in Germany. It symbolises the 1932 merger of the four independent motor-vehicle manufacturers: Audi, DKW, Horch and Wanderer. Together with the NSU brand, which joined in 1969, these companies are the roots of the present-day AUDI AG.
The product placement in the 2004 Hollywood blockbuster "I, Robot" starring Will Smith has proved a huge success for Audi AG. The results of surveys conducted in the USA reveal that the Audi RSQ sports car, which plays a major role in the science fiction thriller, has given a substantial boost to the image ratings of the brand with the four rings in the USA.
Audi has won Le Mans five times in the past six years with its R8 racer and in 2006 Audi aim to have the first Le Mans win with a diesel powered car with the R10 racer which uses a 5.5-litre V12 turbo diesel unit.
