In 1913, Karl Rapp established Rapp-Motorenwerke in Munich. In 1917 Franz-Josef Popp and Max Friz took over Rapp's business and renamed it Bayerische Motoren Werke AG, better known as BMW.

It started as a motor manufacturing company specialising in aircraft engines. The famous Roundel logo that is so familiar to BMW owners stems from the days of its aircraft heritage, and symbolises a spinning propeller.

Bimmer, beemer or beamer? - All real enthusiasts know that BMW really got its reputation from its two wheeled heritage. BMW motorcycles were very successful in bike racing and at the time, its main rival was BSA. As with most marques slang names were associated with them and BMW's were referred to as 'beemers' and the BSA's were called 'beesers'.

As 'beemers' was associated with the two wheeled variety of BMW, 'bimmers' became the accepted slang name for BMW cars.

However, due to the immense driving pleasure most BMW owners get coupled with their large grin, its no surprise that non enthusiasts incorrectly label them 'beamers'.
