The origins of Mazda come from the Toyo Cork Kogyo Co. Ltd, founded in Hiroshima, Japan in 1920, after becoming president of the company in 1927 Jujiro Matsuda quickly pulled it out of the fake cork business and into industrial manufacturing. In the process, he changed the name of the concern to Toyo Kogyo Kaisha Ltd., the company moved from manufacturing tools to vechicles, since the introduction of the Mazda-Go in 1931 and although every car sold since then has bore the name Mazda, the company name of the Mazda Motor Corporation was not adopted until 1984. The Ford Motor Company has now had a controlling interest in Mazda since 1996 when Mazda fell into financial crisis.

The Mazda name is routed in the ancient religion of Zoroastrianism,”Ahura Mazda”, the highest Zoroastrian God of reason who granted wisdom and united man, nature and the other gods. The Madza marketing tag is ”zoom-zoom” and Mazda say ”zoom-zoom fires the soul of every vechicle we build and it beats in the heart of everyone who drives one.”

Arguably the purest expression of the Mazda "Zoom-Zoom" tag is the Mazda MX-5 sports car, the original MX-5 was launched in 1989 and and went on to be one of the Mazda marque’s best selling cars indeed it was listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the worlds best-selling, two-seater sports car. During the year 2000 Mazda celabrated the rolling of the production line of their 35th millionth car.
