Born in 1894, Kiichiro Toyoda founded the Toyota Motor Company in 1935 after completing the prototype A1. Between 1936 and 1943 only 1757 cars were made, as they concentrated on their truck production for the military.

After WWII, Toyota began making the Model SA (The Toyopet). This was a 55mph 27hp cheap car designed to withstand the harsh roads of postwar Japan.

By the year 1955, Toyota were producing 8400 cars per year. This rose to an astonishing 600,000 cars by 1965.

Toyota's were seen as good reliable cars, but lacked the luxury element which other marques such as Audi, Cadillac and Chrysler had. In 1980, utilising staff from the F1 project, Toyota created the brand Lexus. With the expectations of matching Mercedes, the LS400 was given the green light for production in 1987.

Toyota has a city named after it. Originally called Koromo Town, it thrived on the Japanese silk market which eventually went into decline. In 1934, the town invited Toyota to base itself there and in 1959 changed its name to Toyota. The population has increased 25 fold to 350,000 since 1935.
