In 1883 a German named Siegfried Bettman arrived in the UK where he started to build motorcycles under the name of Triumph. Twenty years after building his first motorcycle Siegfried built his first car which was based on the doomed Dawson.
The next few years saw the breakup of the motorcycle / motor car business. Siegfried bought the Dawson Car Company's site and the first Triumph car rolled off the production line in 1923.
After financial difficulties during the 1930's, the compnay was placed into receivership and bought by The Standard Motor Company in 1945. The new ownership brought a resurgence with new models such as the TR2, the TR3, the TR3A and the Herald all being popular.
In 1960, Triumph merged with Leyland Motors and went on to produce the iconic models such as the TR7 and the TR8, although the poor quality of these models became their achilles heel, particulary in the USA. The last model was the Acclaim, which was a joint project with Honda.
The Triumph name disappeared in 1984, but was purchased by BMW when they bough Rover. BMW still own the trademark.
