The origins of Vauxhall can be traced back to 1857 to Alex Wilson & Company (Steam Engineers) who built pumps and marine engines. The name changed to Vauxhall Iron Works in 1894 after it was built on the site of a medieval knights house - Fulk le Breant (Fulk's Hall).

In 1905 the company moved to Luton which was the country residence of the knight Fulk. The name chamged to Vauxhall Motor Company in 1907 where it produced sports cars up until the First World War when it designed more austere models.

General Motors took over the company in 1925 and made a name for itself producing small cars such as the 17hp Cadet and the A-type. During WWII the producion of cars was halted to allow production of the Churchill Tank. Over 5600 tanks were constructed during this time.

During its history, Vauxhall have manufactured over 50 different models

The griffin emblem is derived from the coat of arms for Fulk le Breant. In the 13th century, King John, granted him the Manor of Luton. By marriage he also gained the rights to land on the south side of the River Thames, which of course, now bears the name, Vauxhall.
