In February 1933, Aldof Hitler, the then Chancellor of Germany made a speech at the Berlin Auto Show. He stated his plan for the 'motorization' of Germany. This included building Autobahn's and a 'People's' car.

At the same time Ferdinand Porsche was designing a prototype of an air cooled, rear engined 5 seater car. Porsche delivered 3 prototypes which eventually became the base for military vehicles.

The Allied forces took control of the factory after WWII and made 2000 cars from spares found in the factory, then pushed it to 10,000 cars in 1945. The company was offered to the likes or Ford, Fiat and the French government who all amazingly turned it down, so it was left in trust to the newly formed German government. The rest, as they say, is history.

VW's most famous model is the iconic Beetle. On February 17th 1972, VW surpassed the World Car Production record held by the Ford Model T with 15,007,034 units of the Beetle production in fewer production years.

In 1977, production of the Beetle stopped in Germany, although the Brazilian factory continued to manufacture them right up to the late 1990's.

Now, in the 21st Century, VW are enjoying a Beetle renaissance with the latest encarnation of it.
